Scene from "She Rises Up," a documentary about three women who are supporting their communities through entrepreneurship, playing Aug. 2-8 at the Ross.

A documentary about women elevating their communities through entrepreneurship and a fantasy about a mother and daughter confronting death (in the form of a bird) open Aug. 2 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Directed by Maureen Castle Tutsy, “She Rises Up” chronicles the journeys of three women — Gladys Yupanqui of Peru, Magatte Wade of Senegal, and Selyna Peiris of Sri Lanka — who are helping alleviate poverty through local businesses.

Nearly a third of all countries have laws that stifle a woman’s access to work. These same countries have some of the highest poverty rates in the world. While their stories are unique, the three women follow similar themes that illustrate the importance of local businesses to emerging economies.

“She Rises Up” reveals the role entrepreneurs and small businesses can play in women gaining financial independence and, ultimately, reducing poverty for all.

The film, which is not rated, plays at the Ross through Aug. 8.

The directorial debut of Daina O. Pusić, “Tuesday” follows a mother (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and teenage daughter (Lola Petticrew) as they face off with death — who has arrived in the form of an astonishing talking bird. The film is a heart-rendering fairy tale about loss and discovering resilience in the unexpected.

“Tuesday,” which is rated R for language, shows at the Ross through Aug. 8.
