A documentary showcasing the visionary work of filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger opens Aug. 9 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
Continuing to show is “Tuesday,” a fantasy about a mother and daughter confronting death — which comes in the form of a bird.
Martin Scorsese, who first encountered the films of Powell and Pressburger when he was a child, serves as narrator of “Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger.” In the documentary, Scorsese tells the story of his lifelong love affair with the icons’ films, including “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp,” “Black Narcissus,” “The Red Shoes” and “The Tales of Hoffmann.”
Drawing on a rich archive of material, Scorsese explores the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and Hungarian Pressburger, and their decline in popularity in the 1950s.
“Made in England,” which is not rated, shows at the Ross through Aug. 22.
“Tuesday” is the directorial debut for Daina O. Pusić. The film follows a mother (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and teenage daughter (Lola Petticrew) as they face off with death — who has arrived in the form of an astonishing talking bird. The film is a heart-rending fairy tale about loss and discovering resilience in the unexpected.
“Tuesday,” which is rated R for language, shows at the Ross through Aug. 15.
