A fleet of 250 electric scooters is coming to campus and downtown Lincoln Sept. 1. Students, faculty and staff can test out the scooters for free on Aug. 29 at an educational event in the Haymarket.

The City of Lincoln will host a free safety demonstration of its new electric scooters from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 on Seventh Street between R and Q streets in the Haymarket.

The scooters, made by companies Spin and Bird, are coming to downtown Lincoln on Sept. 1 as part of a pilot program.

Along with details about how students, faculty, staff and the public can use the scooters, the presentation will include details on how to safely ride the electric devices.

Operation guidelines include:

  • Riders must be at least 18 years old to operate a scooter
  • Helmets are encouraged, but not required
  • Scooters must be operated in the street, including on-street bike lanes
  • Scooters must not be ridden on city or university sidewalks, or hiking and bike trails
  • Only one rider is permitted on a scooter at a time
  • Riders must not operate scooters while under the influence of drugs or alcohol

During the Aug. 29 demonstration, scooters will be disinfected and sanitized after every use. The city encourages guests to wear masks at the event and to maintain a six-foot distance from other participants at all times. The demonstration will also include electric bikes from the BikeLNK program.
