Printmaker Phillip Chen will present the next lecture of the Hixson-Lied Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in Richards Hall, Room 15. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Chen’s prints have been exhibited in numerous locations nationally and internationally and are held in public collections that include the Brooklyn Museum, New York Public Library, Carnegie Institute Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago and San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. He has traveled extensively as a visiting artist and served as an evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts, College Art Association and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Chen is a professor of drawing and printmaking at Drake University. His image making has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, Iowa Arts Council and Louis B. Comfort Tiffany Foundation.
The Under Pressure Print Club is providing primary sponsorship for Chen’s visit to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History and Design brings notable artists, scholars and designers to campus each semester to enhance the education of students. Each visiting artist or scholar spends one to three days on campus to meet with classes, participate in critiques and give demonstrations. Every visiting artist or scholar gives at least one major lecture that is free and open to the public.
The remaining lectures in the series this fall include:
• Ron Jude, photography, at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Sheldon Museum of Art’s auditorium. Presented in conjunction with the Sheldon Museum of Art, Jude’s lecture is titled “Those are not mountains you see.” Jude will discuss the dubious empirical and storytelling assumptions we make about photographic images, his sleight-of-hand influence on these expectations and how this strategy employs narrative as an artificial container for an engagement with the poetics of experience.
• Iva Gueorguieva, painting and sculpture, at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in Richards Hall, Room 15. She lives and works in Los Angeles and received her Master of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
• Radha Pandey, papermaker and letterpress printer, at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in Richards Hall, Room 15. Pandey earned her Master of Fine Arts in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she was a recipient of the Iowa Arts Fellowship.
• Priya Kambli, photography, at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 in Richards Hall, Room 15. Kambli’s work is rooted in her fascination in the intersection between her parents’ lives in India and her own in the U.S. For Kambli, photography is a means to bridge the gap between two cultures, come to terms with the effects of displacement and to illuminate connections between the past and the present.
• Chris Gustin and Gerit Grimm, ceramics, at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in Richards Hall, Room 15. Their visit is sponsored primarily by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Clay Club. Gustin is one of the leading ceramists of his generation with more than 40 solo exhibitions at leading institutions and galleries throughout the world. Grimm is assistant professor of art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
