The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center continues its tradition of presenting the Oscar-nominated short films on the big screen. The 2024 Oscar Shorts, which encompass the live action, documentary, and animated categories, will begin showing Feb. 15.
Also opening is the Spanish-language film, “Tótem.” Continuing is “The Teacher’s Lounge.”
For the 19th consecutive year, ShortsTV and Magnolia Pictures present the Oscar-Nominated Short Films. With all three categories offered, this is the chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool). A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, don’t miss this year’s selection of shorts. The Academy Awards take place March 10.
A festival pass, good for admission to all three programs, will be available at the Ross Box Office. The suggested rating for the animation and live action programs is R, due to adult themes and content. The suggested rating for the documentary program is PG-13. The compilations are showing through Feb. 29.
In “Tótem,” 7-year-old Sol is swept up in a whirlwind of preparations for the birthday party for her father, Tona, led by her mother, aunts and other relatives in a bustling Mexican household. As the day goes on, building to an event both anticipated and dreaded, Sol begins to understand the gravity of the celebration this year and watches as her family does the same. This poignant and emotionally expansive film from Lila Avilés cements her skill at directing dynamic ensemble performances in her stunning sophomore effort.
“Tótem” is not rated and is showing through Feb. 22.
