Clarice Ramsey

Clarice Ramsey, 100, assistant professor emerita in secondary education in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, died Feb. 27.

Born Nov. 3, 1925, in Culbertson to L. Henry and Amy (Lewis) Siekmann, Ramsey grew up in Nebraska, following the education career of her father in communities including Diller, Lincoln, Dix and Wood River.

Ramsey graduated from Hastings College, where she majored in education. She was named the 1947 Bronco Award winner, an honor given to the most outstanding senior. She began her career as an educator in Nelson and later moved to Lincoln, where she served as director of the Havelock YWCA.

She eventually returned to the classroom at Mickle Junior High in Lincoln, where she taught social studies. While teaching and raising her family, Ramsey earned both her master’s degree and doctorate in education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. While pursuing her doctorate, she also began teaching in the Education Department on campus. As faculty, Ramsey taught social studies and English methods, as well as courses in creativity and higher-level thinking. She was honored twice by Lincoln Public Schools with the “Thank You Teacher” recognition, once as a university teacher and once as a retired teacher.

In 1987, Ramsey retired as a faculty member in secondary education in what was then the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She taught in the areas of social studies education and English education and published articles including “Cultural Understanding for Global Citizenship: An Inservice Model." Her work at Nebraska was informed by many years of teaching in public schools.

“Dr. Ramsey had good connections with teachers and worked hard to maintain communication and relationships that facilitated pre-service teacher placements in practica and student teaching,” said Dave Wilson, professor emeritus of teaching, learning and teacher education.

Ramsey was lovingly celebrated by her family on her 100th birthday in November. Memorials may be made to the Dr. Clarice Ramsey Scholarship Fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation.
