Adonna (Donna) Fleming died Nov. 25 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Fleming was a librarian and professor with University Libraries from 2004 until her retirement in 2021.
Fleming grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated from the University of Arizona with degrees in journalism, geology and library science.
She began her professional career at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. From there, she moved to Greeley, Colorado, and joined the faculty at the University of Northern Colorado.
She joined the Nebraska faculty ranks as a GIS map science librarian and head of the math and geology libraries. She was promoted to full professor in 2014.
Fleming performed much research throughout her career. She was the principal investigator for several grants, including the 2008 grant “MAGIC Metadata Triage: Enhancing local government’s ability to create and maintain compliant metadata through a MAGIC regional approach.” In 2013, she received the Best Paper Award from the Geoscience Information Society for her presentation “Mapping the Works of Mari Sandoz.” Her work on “Ogallala Aquifer in Nebraska: Gray Literature,” with Leslie Delserone and Elaine Nowick, in 2012 highlighted the importance of the aquifer in Nebraska. Fleming belonged to several international and national societies and served as president of the GSIS in 2005-06.
Fleming is survived by her sister, Debi (Dennis) McCarthy of Tucson; nieces Kelly McCarthy of Tucson and Tracy (Peter) Kootsikas of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and great nephew and nieces, Connor, Zoe and Alexandra.
Fleming treasured books, and of course rocks, but she really loved dogs, rescuing and adopting several. Memorials can be made to the Capitol Humane Society of Lincoln.
A celebration of life will take place at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in the reception room at Butherus, Mather and Love, 4040 A St. in Lincoln.
