William J. Nunez has officially been selected to serve as vice chancellor for business and finance at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Nunez has led business and finance operations in an interim status since Dec. 15, 2017. He previously served as associate to the chancellor and chief of staff for Chancellor Ronnie Green as well as former Chancellor Harvey Perlman.
The appointment, which Green announced April 10, is pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
“Bill has earned the trust and respect of faculty, staff and administrators during his tenure at Nebraska, formed a strong, highly collaborative team during his interim status, and initiated key strategic projects essential to the future of the university,” Green said. “Based on his record of leadership success and support voiced by university supporters on campus and across the nation, now is the time to remove the interim status.
“This change will allow Bill to better serve the university as he continues to transform our business and finance operations.”
Nunez has been a member of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s senior administrative team since 2003. He worked as director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning before joining the chancellor’s office in 2010. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business and master’s and doctoral degrees in education. Before joining the University of Nebraska, he served in the Office of Planning and Budget at the University of Louisville in Kentucky for 12 years.
He is a professor of practice in the College of Education and Human Sciences.
“It has been a privilege to serve the university and business and finance team in an interim capacity these past 16 months,” Nunez said. “We have excellent momentum and a strengthened commitment to support our academic, research and service mission.
“I am excited to continue to lead the business and finance team in a permanent capacity as we build upon our tradition of excellent service to the university community. I am also humbled to continue my service to Nebraska, helping guide the university as it moves beyond this sesquicentennial year as a transformative, world-leading, Land-Grant institution.”
Nunez succeeded Christine Jackson, who retired after 17 years in the role of vice chancellor of business and finance.
The vice chancellor for business and finance serves as the university’s senior business officer and reports directly to the chancellor. The vice chancellor is responsible for oversight and administration of all budget, financial and administrative services supporting the university’s $1.3 billion operating budget in compliance with NU Board of Regents policy and state and federal laws. The position is also responsible for all activities related to the university’s physical facilities and grounds, utilities, environmental health and safety, human resources, university police, parking and transit services, and sustainability. The business and finance unit has approximately 850 employees and an annual operating budget of $64 million.
The vice chancellor also works closely with vice chancellors for business at the other institutions in the NU system, and the vice president for business and finance in the system’s central administration office.
