Renovation of the Nebraska Union food court has entered a new phase, with completion scheduled for fall 2026. The project will expand dining options and modernize the space for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
With design and construction plans finalized this fall, contractors have begun more visible demolition and build-out work. Temporary construction walls are being installed around the current food court, and east-side meeting rooms are being incorporated into the expanded dining area. The Imperial Palace location is fully walled off to allow safe demolition.
Food service will continue throughout the renovation. Chick-fil-A remains open in its expanded location, a pop-up Husker Heroes serves weekday lunch, and Valentino’s, the new Herbie’s Market, and university-operated food trucks (when warmer weather returns) remain available. The Selleck Hall Food Court, which is adjacent to the Nebraska Union and includes the recently opened Runza, continues normal operations.
When complete, the Nebraska Union food court will grow from three concepts to five, including Valentino’s, a refreshed Imperial Palace and a permanent Husker Heroes location. Two additional concepts will be announced in spring 2026. The renovation also includes a reconfigured kitchen for more efficient service, updated equipment, and a biodigester system to support campus sustainability initiatives.
“Students and staff have asked for more variety and faster service,” said Lucas Novotny, executive director of University Housing, Dining Services, and Nebraska Unions. “This renovation delivers on that. By fall 2026, the Nebraska Union will provide more dining options in a refreshed, modern space.”
Novotny also thanked the campus community for its patience during construction.
“We know work in the building can be inconvenient, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding,” Novotny said. “These improvements will serve Huskers for years to come while maintaining food service throughout the project.”
Updates will be shared as construction progresses. Learn more about the project here. For more information, contact the Nebraska Unions or Dining Services.
