Steve Beck has been selected through a national search to serve as the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s next assistant vice chancellor for human resources.

The appointment was announced April 14 by Mary LaGrange, interim vice chancellor for business and finance.

Beck brings years of experience in guiding progressive human resources programs in the healthcare and manufacturing industries. Since 2013, he has served as the senior human resources executive at the Kearney Regional Medical Center, a role in which he led the creation of a human resources department.

Beck is also a former University of Nebraska–Lincoln employee, having started his career more than 25 years ago as a senior human resources facilitator with Human Resources, then as an HR manager within Athletics.

“This is a full-circle moment for which I’m grateful,” Beck said. “I look forward to finding ways to create an excellent employment experience for all members of our campus community. It’s truly an honor to be part of the NU family once more and to lead an HR team that makes a meaningful impact.”

Beck has bachelor’s degrees in business administration and psychology, both from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from Kansas State University.

The university’s assistant vice chancellor for human resources is responsible for providing executive leadership for the institution’s human resource operations and organization. The position is also responsible for ensuring compliance with human resource laws and regulations, as well as identifying and recommending remedies for HR risk mitigation.

The position works collectively with the University of Nebraska’s Office of the President and other human resources leaders in the NU system.

Beck will begin the new role on June 8. He replaces Bruce Currin, who retires May 2 after 37 years of service to the University of Nebraska. LaGrange will assume human resources responsibilities between May 2 and June 7.
