William McMullen, oboe, and Catherine Herbener, piano, will be presenting a recital of four works for oboe and piano by British composers from the Baroque era to the modern time at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 in Kimball Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
The performance will include works by Thomas Vincent (an oboist active in London at the time of Handel), York Bowen (a “romantic” pianist of the mid-20th century), Andrew Downes (a composer in Birmingham writing about his experiences in eastern India) and Malcolm Arnold (one of the wittiest of modern British composers for wind music). The program is a continuation of McMullen’s ongoing research into British music for the oboe.
McMullen, professor of oboe, is principal oboe with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and oboist in the Moran Woodwind Quintet. He has appeared as soloist with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and the Nebraska Chamber Orchestra in performances of the Strauss, Mozart and Vaughan-Williams concertos.
