Students of all ages are invited to learn from home with the Lied Center for Performing Arts’ Lied Learning Online series.
In September, participants can go behind the music with two composers recently nominated for their first Emmy, take an imaginary journey to the farm, learn what it takes to act in a TV commercial and meet a local band destined for big things.
All events are available on the Lied Center’s Facebook page and website.
The schedule:
Lunch and Learn: “The ‘Marvelous’ Music of the Emmys,” noon, Sept. 1 — The music of the hit Amazon Prime series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has earned the composer and lyricist team of Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore their first Emmy nomination. In the September episode of the Lied’s live video podcast series, the duo will discuss their 1960s-inspired sound and creative process.
Tiny Lieders: “A Trip to the Farm: Yoga, Movement and Music,” 10 a.m., Sept. 10 — This series is specifically for the Lied’s youngest patrons, and this month participants are headed to the farm. Ashley Laverty, artistic director for Kerfuffle theater company, will lead a 45-minute movement, music and yoga jam designed for children under age 6. Children are encouraged to bring their favorite farm-themed books or toys to the session.
Master Classes at the Lied: Commercial Acting, noon, Sept. 20 — This Zoom master class for students ages 11-18 will focus on acting for TV commercials. Lied Center teaching artist Sasha Dobson will lead students through exercises focusing on how to approach commercial copy in a cold reading, break down a script and act in front of the camera. She will also offer helpful tips on bringing personality to a character and what to wear. No preparation is required — just a willingness to try something new.
Huskers in the Spotlight: Past Casual, noon, Sept. 29 — The Lied’s newest virtual concert series features special performances from University of Nebraska–Lincoln students and alumni. Lincoln-based indie funk band Past Casual will perform next. The band was formed in spring 2018 and has since played frequently throughout Lincoln and Omaha. The band performed at the And This is 2020 music festival at Omaha’s Sokol Auditorium in January and plans to release an EP this fall.
