The University Libraries, through our participation in the Big Ten Academic Alliance consortium, has secured a 2026-27 open access publishing agreement with Wiley.

Through Dec. 31, 2027, eligible BTAA authors will receive:

  • Unlimited open access publishing at no cost to authors (faculty, students and staff) for articles accepted in 2026 and 2027 in Wiley hybrid open access journals.
  • No caps or limits on the number of eligible articles in these journals.
  • Full read access to Wiley's journal portfolio through their institution.
  • Perpetual access rights to subscribed content.

Important changes to the publishing experience

The agreement maintains the BTAA's "no fees, no caps, no limits" approach for Wiley hybrid open access journal articles accepted in 2026 and 2027. All eligible articles accepted by the end of 2027 will be published at no cost to the author.

The new agreement does, however, impose limits on the number of articles that can be published in Wiley gold open access journals, which are fully open access and do not have a paywall option.

Articles submitted to gold open access journals before Sept. 1, 2026, are covered under the central BTAA contract. From Sept. 1 through Dec. 31, 2026, University Libraries will cover the costs associated with publishing in Wiley's gold open access journals. At most other BTAA institutions, those costs will revert to authors after Sept. 1.

University Libraries is pleased to support UNL authors in a turbulent financial and publishing landscape. See the Open Access Agreement Guide for more details.

Authors considering publishing in a Wiley journal should be mindful of each journal's submission-to-acceptance timeline. Information about publishing in gold open access journals in 2027 will be shared when it becomes available.
