The Department of Classics and Religious Studies will host a lecture on teaching yoga in public schools, 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in Andrews Hall, Bailey Library (room 229). Admission is free and open to the public.
The lecture, “Why are Public Schools and Mindfulness Programs Popular and Controversial,” will be led by Candy Gunther Brown, professor of religious studies at Indiana University. She will explain the appeal and most common objections to public school yoga, mindfulness, and other meditation programs.
Brown will examine legal and ethical stakes in the debate, including her belief that opt-in programs are the best way to achieve a respect for cultural and religious diversity.
Brown received a doctorate from Harvard University and is the author of six books. Copies of her newest book, “Debating Yoga and Mindfulness in Public Schools,” will be available for purchase and signing.
