The Horticulture 307 Hydroponics for Growing Populations class will demonstrate hydroponic systems during an open house Nov. 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Plant Science Teaching Greenhouse on Nebraska East Campus.
The class is taught by Stacy Adams, associate professor of practice in agronomy and horticulture.
“Students link the application of hydroponics to the grand challenges of increasing accessibility of fresh foods, an increasing global population, climatic variation, and improving sustainability of intensive food production systems,” Adams said.
The students will demonstrate five industry and hobby hydroponic systems which include Deep Flow Technique (DFT), Deep Water Culture (DWC), Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Bato bucket closed loop system, and non-recirculating bag culture. Students will also exhibit prototype systems created as teams to propose systems to meet specific purposes or as demonstrations for those in education and public outreach.
This event is open to the public. Guests can enter through the north door of the greenhouse and peruse the different systems at their leisure and engage in discussion with students about hydroponics.
