The College of Architecture will bring celebrated landscape architecture influencer Michael Grove to present the next Hyde Lecture, “Luck, Glamour, Passion and Prestige… and why they’re all a fallacy,” at 4 p.m. Nov. 6 in Richards Hall, room 15.
For this lecture, Grove will expound the virtues of working with a global lens and perspective. Historically, landscape architecture has suffered from a predominantly parochial viewpoint. While a hyper-local perspective is critical, it is equally important to recognize that societal issues are interrelated, interdependent and international. From climate change and biodiversity loss to inequity and environmental justice, these challenges speak to a shared humanity and are global in scale — just as this profession should be.
As Grove states, “Working globally isn’t glamorous, it’s necessary.”
Grove is chair of landscape architecture, civil engineering and ecology at SASAKI, a global design firm with offices in Boston, Denver, New York, Los Angeles and Shanghai. Leading Sasaki’s international work, Grove offers insight into the environmental and social impacts of urbanization around the world and is a fierce advocate for the vital role that landscape architects play in shaping contemporary cities. Informed by a rigorous inquiry of economic, ecological and cultural influences, Grove believes that the role of the designer is to make cities more livable, equitable, resilient and just.
Grove’s career spans a variety of project types and scales including regional planning, urban districts and waterfronts. Grove is a graduate of Cornell University, a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, member of the Placemaking Council of the Urban Land Institute and president-elect of the Landscape Architecture Foundation.
This presentation is part of the College of Architecture’s 2023-2024 Hyde Lecture Series featuring speakers from across disciplines that are united under the common theme of “Advancing Health: Planning and Designing for Healthful Places,” a thought-provoking series that highlights the important connection between the built environment and human health. Join the lecture series and explore avenues strategizing and creating healthful places that foster a brighter, more equitable future.
The college’s Hyde Lecture Series is a long-standing, endowed, public program. Each year the college hosts compelling speakers in the fields of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning that enrich the ongoing dialog around agendas which are paramount to the design disciplines.
