Laurel Consuelo Broughton, founder of the internationally acclaimed design firm WELCOME, will be giving the next Hyde Lecture, “Welcome Projects,” at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 in Architecture Hall, Room 127.
Broughton will present a comprehensive exploration of both recent and past projects developed in her studio. She will delve into the evolution of her design philosophy and creative process by showcasing visual examples. Through these images, she will highlight how her approach has developed over time, illustrating the recurring themes, influences, and innovations that shape her studio’s work. The presentation will provide an opportunity to understand the breadth of her portfolio, offering insights into both the conceptual foundations and tangible outcomes of WELCOME’s designs.
WELCOME is a design studio in Los Angeles revisiting the vernacular and telling stories through design, one project at a time. Their work engages with everyday objects in a variety of scales and purposes from architectural developments to installations to handbag accessories. Broughton said WELCOME collaborates closely with clients and partners to bring a sense of fun, suspense and narrative into the spaces and objects encountered and relied upon daily. Broughton’s passion for vintage objects and quirky buildings, combined with her architectural sensibility, is reflected in all of the studio's design work.
In the spring of 2017, Broughton served as the Howard A. Friedman Visiting Professor in the Practice of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley College of Environmental Design. She has also taught design studios, seminars and workshops at institutions including the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University; School of Architecture, University of Southern California; ArtCenter College of Design; University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; Tulane School of Architecture; and Syracuse University School of Architecture, among others.
The Hyde Lecture Series is an endowed, public program hosted by the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Each year, the series invites leading experts from architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning to present on topics that inspire thought-provoking discussions. The 2024-2025 Hyde Lecture Series is centered on the theme “TRAJECTORIES,” focusing on the varied and complex career paths within and adjacent to the design and planning fields. These lectures provide a unique opportunity for students, professionals and the public to engage with top industry leaders and explore diverse career possibilities in the design disciplines.
