“The Souvenir Part II,” a 2021 drama written and directed by Joanna Hogg, opens Dec. 10 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
Continuing to show is “Benedetta,” a drama about the fall of a 17th century nun.
Building on the events of “The Souvenir Part I,” student filmmaker Julie (played by Honor Swinton Byrne), begins to untangle her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic and manipulative older man. She returns to film school and writes a new script about her relationship.
Advisers push for Julie to abandon the new direction, but she pushes forward with making the script a reality. The story reflects Hogg’s real-world experience in film school.
“The Souvenir Part II,” which is rated R for language and some strong sexuality, shows at the Ross through Dec. 23.
Directed and co-written by Paul Verhoeven, “Benedetta” follows Benedetta Carlini (played by Virginie Efira), a novice nun who joins an Italian convent. Benedetta — who has an affair with a fellow nun — grows to become well-respected by her religious entourage. However, her religious visions threaten the church and Benedetta is detained and judged for the affair.
“Benedetta,” which is not rated, shows through Dec. 16 at the Ross.
