Renowned percussionist, drummer, composer and filmmaker Evan Chapman will present a recital of new works for drumset and electronics 7:30 p.m. September 12 at Kimball Recital Hall.
The guest artist’s program includes works commissioned by Chapman from composers including Anna Meadors, Robert Honstein, Ian Chang, Molly Joyce, Alicia Walter, Alexis Lamb, Molly Joyce and Edward Babcock. The performance is free and open to the public.
Based in Philadelphia, Chapman earned his bachelor’s in classical percussion performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He has gone on to build a prolific and unique career by seamlessly blending multimedia and contemporary music. Chapman is a founding member of contemporary-classical percussion trio/rock band Square Peg Round Hole, which recently released its sophomore full-length LP, Juniper, on Spartan Records. The group’s original compositions, dubbed a “creative adventure” by NPR, have received critical acclaim from Modern Drummer Magazine, Paste Magazine, Mental Floss, Boing Boing and Relix, among others. Chapman also tours with the successful pop/rock band Lydia.
As a filmmaker, Chapman has become one of the most in-demand collaborators in the contemporary-classical world. He has directed, shot, edited and recorded official music videos, in-studio videos, mini-documentaries and live sessions for some of the biggest names in today’s indie-classical scene, including the Bang on a Can All-Stars, S? Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, David Lang, Chris Cerrone, Michael Burritt, Andy Akiho and many others.
