The Great Plains Art Museum will host Omaha-based artist Linda Rivera García as the 2023 Elizabeth Rubendall Artist in Residence April 4-15. Rivera García is a Mexican-American artist, teacher and storyteller who has been sharing her culture throughout Nebraska for decades.
A graduate of Omaha’s College of Saint Mary and a retired children’s librarian, she is a multifaceted artist who works in painting, sculpture and printmaking, and with traditional Mexican art forms such as papel picado (cut paper) and repujado (metal embossing). A solo exhibition of Rivera García’s artwork will be on view at the museum from March 24 through Sept. 22.
During her residency, Rivera García will create an artwork that will become part of the museum’s permanent collection. Visitors are encouraged to see the artist in action in the lower-level Elizabeth Rubendall Artist-in-Residence Studio and Education Lab during the museum’s public hours. Groups can schedule tours by emailing Alison Cloet at acloet3@unl.edu.
The museum will hold a public celebration of the exhibition opening with food and music during Lincoln’s First Friday Artwalk from 5 to 7 p.m. April 7.
Rivera García will also teach two free, in-person public workshops April 8 on the art of papel picado. Registration is required, and workshops are limited to 20 participants each.
The workshops are:
- 11 a.m. to noon: beginner’s workshop, intended for children ages 5 and up and families
- 2 to 3 p.m.: advanced workshop, intended for ages 13 and up
To register, contact Cloet at acloet3@unl.edu or 402-472-3964.
Since its inception in 2006, the Elizabeth Rubendall Foundation has funded the Artist-in-Residence Program, which allows museum visitors and school groups to witness an artist in action.
The Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St., is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, click here.
