Two new exhibitions are now open at the Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“Up in the Air: Great Plains Weather” explores how artists have chosen to depict the ever-changing weather on the Great Plains. These images of snow-covered landscapes, tumultuous storms and cloud-filled skies contribute to our understanding of how dynamic weather events affect the landscape and people of the region.

“Charles W. Guildner: Retrospective of Life’s Work” is a photography exhibition by a native Nebraskan. In 1990, Guildner set out to photograph the landscape and people of the rural heartland. In the years since, he has expertly recorded how the people of this region have maintained their traditional ways of life. This exhibition — a retrospective of Guildner’s 30-year photographic career — features examples from his “Lives of Tradition” series and other projects.

“We are looking forward to sharing the visual story of weather on the Great Plains with ‘Up in the Air,’” said Ashley Hussman, museum director and curator. “And the museum is honored to be able to present a retrospective of Guildner’s prolific career. We hope our audiences will learn something new about the Great Plains through these two engaging exhibitions.”

Guildner will attend the exhibition’s opening reception during Lincoln’s First Friday Artwalk, 5-7 p.m. Feb. 7, for an artist meet and greet. The exhibitions run through May 9.

The Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St., is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
