Jolie Graybill, assistant professor with the University Libraries, has published an article on a study that explores leadership perceptions of Millennials working in academic libraries.
The article, “Millennials among the Professional Workforce in Academic Libraries: Their Perspective on Leadership,” was published in the January 2014 issue of the Journal of Academic Librarianship.
Graybill surveyed Millennials (born in 1982 or after) working full-time in Big Ten libraries in 2011-12. The survey showed that leadership attributes important to Millennials include group/teamwork, communication, respect, vision and influence.
Graybill believes the results could be used by academic library administrators to prepare and plan professional development programming related to Millennials. It also may mean supervisors need to consider redesigning positions to take advantage of teamwork interests and skills while also providing Millennials with more support on leadership attributes that they may not be as skilled in.
