Plans to open an expanded Starbucks are percolating in the Nebraska Union.

During the summer, the student union on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s City Campus will expand its Caffina Café — which serves a limited selection of the Seattle-based coffee mega-chain’s drink products — into a full-service, licensed Starbucks location. The project began the week of May 15 with coffee pouring in the fall semester.

“In response to student requests, the full experience of a Starbucks is coming to the Nebraska Union,” said Brian Bollich, assistant director for business affairs in the Nebraska Unions. “Our location will have the same drinks, same food offerings and novelty items you can get at other full-service Starbucks locations. We will also be able to accept Starbucks gift cards and participate in the customer rewards program.”

The Starbucks will replace Caffina Café, which is located near the Nebraska Union’s north entrance. During the summer months, the Nebraska Union will continue to offer a limited selection of drinks and food items on a mobile cart near the Runza restaurant.

The Nebraska Union's Caffina Café became a "Proudly Brewed" location, offering limited Starbucks drink options, in 2014.

Caffina Café has long been a part of the Nebraska Union. It started to serve a limited selection of Starbucks brand coffee in fall 2014 when it became a “Proudly Brewed” outlet.

“We’ve been hearing from students for a long time that they desired a full-service Starbucks location and not just the limited options in the existing coffee shop,” Bollich said. “We are looking forward to meet that demand.”

Other benefits of becoming a licensed Starbucks location include the hiring of additional baristas, shift managers and an assistant manager. Additional summer improvement projects in the Nebraska Union include a remodel of restrooms on the north side of the first floor, and a renovation of the auditorium.
