First Friday includes five art exhibits, choral performance

The art of Mark Marcuson is featured in the First Friday event at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Morrill Hall.

First Friday events at UNL museums and galleries on May 2 will feature four art exhibitions and a performance by a new multi-generational choral ensemble. All the events are free and open to the public.

The University of Nebraska State Museum in Morrill Hall is showcasing “Mark Marcuson: An Artist’s Journey.” The exhibit shows the evolution of the artistic talent of Marcuson, a Nebraska painter/muralist and former scientific illustrator at the museum.

The Rotunda Gallery in the Nebraska Union closes out the Eighth Annual UNL Staff Art Show with a public reception, 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery.

The exhibit includes the work of 20 UNL employees and a variety of fine arts media. Employees featured in the show are Tarik Abdel-Monem, Valerie Bender, Eileen E. Bergt, Samantha Bray, Jennifer Brown, Cindia Carlson-Tsuda, Ann Chalupa, Nesrin Comez-Vance, Karin Dalziel, Keith Derickson, Rachel Garver, Margaret Llewellyn Gipson, Duane Grosse, Jennifer Klein, Deanna Larson, Justin Lewis, Gretchen Mills, Katie Nieland, Melissa L. R. Sinner and Kelly Wilken White.

The other two art exhibit First Friday events are at the Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum, and the Great Plains Art Museum.

The tractor museum is showing prints from the collection of Nebraska artist Craig Cassell, a quadriplegic who drew with his mouth. The exhibit is in the East Campus museum’s new Splinter Gallery. First Friday at the Great Plains Museum includes “Dry Times” by ceramic artist Jess Benjamin and “Drought Interpretations,” a guest-curated exhibit of drought-related works. The museum will be open 5 to 7 p.m.

At the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, the newly formed, multi-generational choral ensemble i2Choir will perform at 5:30 p.m. The group, formed through a partnership between the Glenn Korff School of Music and the quilt museum, offers music making opportunities for individuals of all abilities. The museum will be open 4:30 to 7 p.m.
