The Great Plains Art Museum will host First Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at 1155 Q St. The free event will feature three exhibitions, light refreshments and an insect and butterfly origami activity in the lower-level education studio.
Visitors can explore “Jennifer Angus: Like a Moth to the Flame,” which opens Aug. 7 and uses insect specimens to highlight the hidden ecosystems and important role of insects in the Great Plains. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Community for Arthropod Research, Education and Materials Innovation.
The museum will also feature “Moving with the Hydrocommons,” a project by Mac Kelsey, the Center for Great Plains Studies’ 2025-26 Student Storyteller in Residence, and “With a Little Help from Our Friends: New Perspectives on the Collection,” which showcases responses to artwork from Great Plains Fellows across the University of Nebraska system.
First Friday is open to faculty, staff, students, alumni and the public. The Great Plains Art Museum is located at 1155 Q St. in Lincoln.

Sheldon Museum of Art will stay open until 7 p.m. and host a guided tour of outdoor sculptures located around the museum and throughout City Campus. The tour begins at 6 p.m. in Sheldon’s Great Hall. The event is free and open to the public, and registration is encouraged.
Both First Friday events are open to faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members.
