In accordance with Department of Homeland Security concerns, Information Technology Services at the University of Nebraska has issued a warning about Kaspersky Lab software.
Recent media reports have highlighted suspected ties between Kaspersky, a Russian cybersecurity software company, and Russian government intelligence operations. The reports include a potential data security issue for users of Kaspersky products, including their popular anti-virus software.
The Department of Homeland Security has issued a public warning regarding Kaspersky software. In addition, both armed services committees in the House and Senate have approved legislation that would ban the U.S. military from using or owning Kaspersky products.
While security risks involving Kaspersky are under assessment, ITS is alerting the university community to the potential risks. The university provides anti-virus solutions free of charge to students, faculty and staff. Recommended antivirus programs include products from Symantec, Norton, McAfee and AVG. For malware protection, the university recommends Malwarebytes.
The university’s ITS team will continue to provide updates on Kaspersky concerns.
