The National Fellowships Office is accepting nominations for its National Fellowships Review Committee for the 2020-21 academic year.
This committee offers faculty and staff an opportunity to provide substantial service to the university, improve the reputation and national standing of the university, and at the same time have a positive impact on individual undergraduate students and their success by impacting the quality of their applications for awards such as the Fulbright, Goldwater, Marshall, Rhodes and Truman.
Eight to 10 University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty and staff will be selected to participate on the committee. The initial obligation will be for one year with a reevaluation in the spring concerning future involvement.
The committee will
• Advise the director on University of Nebraska–Lincoln Fellowships Office processes, infrastructure, outreach, programs, communications and policies, as well as procedures unique to each individual award program.
• Suggest other faculty to participate on various review and mock interview committees
• Encourage students in their unit to apply for these awards
• Offer support to faculty on how to write strong letters of recommendation
For institutionally nominated awards, committee members will serve on one of three sub-committees listed below. These subcommittees will meet ad hoc based on the number of student applications for various awards.
• STEM Committee — Oversees selection of the Goldwater and Churchill candidates
• Humanities Committee — Oversees selection of the Truman, Beinecke, Marshall and Rhodes awards
• Global Committee — Supports processes for the Fulbright and Boren awards.
Chair of Committee
The director of the National and International Fellowships Office chairs the committee.
Time Commitment
The committee will meet as a whole a minimum of two times a year, with subcommittees meeting as needed to review and select student applications for submission, including reading student essays and participating in mock interviews.
Subcommittee time will largely be driven by the numbers of students who make applications for these competitive awards in any given year. Should the number of students applying grow, subcommittees would add additional members in order to keep the time commitment manageable.
Interested faculty or staff should submit a short statement of interest by June 1 to Laura Damuth.
