The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Drone Journalism Lab will host a workshop Sept. 21-23 at Embassy Suites, 1040 P St. in Lincoln.
The workshop will offer training on safe drone operation and prepare journalists for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 drone pilot certification test. The program will also help those seeking recertification.
In addition, the workshop will focus on the ethical issues of drone journalism, community best practices, coordinated operations in a breaking news environment and ways drone photography can be used in innovative storytelling.
Matt Waite, professor of practice in news-editorial at Nebraska, will lead the workshop.
“As a certified drone pilot, I know how difficult the exam can be for people who have no other pilot training,” he said. “Our goal is to give you the tools and fundamental knowledge you will need to study for and pass the FAA’s test.”
Mickey H. Osterreicher, legal counsel for the National Press Photographers Association, will lead sessions on legal issues associated with drone journalism.
“NPPA has been at the forefront in advocating for the use of drones for newsgathering. With that opportunity comes an inherent role of operating them in a legal, safe and responsible manner,” he said. “The legal landscape is especially complex because state and local governments increasingly are imposing their own restrictions on drone flights.”
The program also will feature hands-on introductory flight training on a variety of platforms.
Participation will be limited to the first 60 people to register.
Regular registration is $295. The cost is $275 for students and $250 for NPPA members.
