Nebraska’s Kwame Dawes will read new poems inspired by the work of Barry Lopez and an exhibition of photographs donated by 50 American photographers to honor the late writer, at 5:30 p.m. May 4 in Sheldon Museum of Art.
During the event, Dawes will offer his perspective on the brilliance and compassion of Lopez, who wrote about the landscape in lyrical prose that offered a vivid account of humankind’s relationship with the natural world.
The poetry reading will take place among the galleries housing the exhibition, “From Here to the Horizon: Photographs in Honor of Barry Lopez.”
Dawes is the author of 20 books of poetry and numerous other books of fiction, criticism, and essays. He is currently the George Holmes Distinguished Professor of English and Glenna Luschei Editor of Prairie Schooner at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Best known for “Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape,” which received the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1986, Lopez was the author of dozens of essays and works of fiction and nonfiction, including the recently released “Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World.”
