Nebraska’ Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center is closing 2024 with two award-winning films — the soulful “All We Imagine as Light,” and the Francis Ford Coppola classic “The Conversation.”
Showing Dec. 20-22 and returning Jan. 3-9, “All We Imagine as Light” follows the lives of three working-class women in Mumbai as they deal with heartache, hopes and disappointment. Directed and written by Payal Kapadia, the film is a study of the complexities and richness of friendship and sisterhood.
“All We Imagine as Light” won the Grand Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It is not rated.
“The Conversation” returns for three days only, Dec. 20-22, in a 4K restoration to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The film, which won the 1974 Palme d’Or, features Gene Hackman as Harry Caul, a lonely wiretapping expert and devout Catholic.
Caul is hired to record a conversation between to lovers in San Francisco’s Union Square. However, upon listening to the taps, Caul believes he will put the couple in danger if he turns the audio over to his client (played by Robert Duvall).
Released in 1974, the thriller is rated PG for some violence and adult themes. It also stars Harrison Ford, Frederic Forrest, Cindy Williams and John Cazale.
The Ross will be closed Dec. 23 to Jan. 2 in observance of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s winter shutdown.
