The University Honors Program’s Cooper Conversation series will highlight the personal experiences of athletes and their advocates in a 12:30 to 2 p.m. Feb. 16 session in the Willa Cather Dining Complex, Red Cloud A.
The conversation, “Tackling the Complex Dynamics of Race, Sports and Social Justice,” is free and open to all students. Participants will discuss contemporary issues and their historical context in college and professional sports, the media, and the sports industry.
Featured presenters are Nebraska Athletics’ Lawrence Chatters, executive associate athletic director for diversity, equity and inclusion; Jaime Williams, former Husker and NFL tight end, educator and athletic director; Jay Foreman, former Husker and NFL linebacker; and Michael Rose-Ivey, former Husker linebacker.
Each presenter will share their background and experiences. And, during small group discussions, each will rotate through tables, allowing students to speak with the presenters directly.
The discussion ties directly to the annual theme of the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues, “Moments of Reckoning: Global Calls for Racial Equity and Action.” It also is tied to a University Honors seminar, “Racial Reckoning and Sports Culture,” taught by John Shrader, professor of journalism and mass communication.
Seating is limited Registration, available here, is required by Feb. 14. For more information, contact Rebecca Baskerville at rlbaskerville@unl.edu.
