The University of Nebraska–Lincoln will celebrate the life and legacy of Juan Franco at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Wick Alumni Center.
Franco, known for positive and inclusive leadership for more than a decade as Nebraska’s vice chancellor for student affairs, died Aug. 1 in Houston. He was 68.
As Nebraska’s top administrator for students, Franco spearheaded initiatives that encouraged students to aspire to leadership and civic involvement. His tenure also saw the expansion and enhancement of student services, including construction of the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center and several new residence halls.
The celebration of life is free and open to the public. Speakers will include Chancellor Ronnie Green; former Chancellor Harvey Perlman; Steven Jara, hall director of the Massengale Residential Center; students Valeria Rodriguez and Brianna Ridenour; and a member of the Franco family.
The event will include musical performances featuring Darryl White, associate professor music, and Alfonso Cooper, graduate student in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
At the close of the event, a balloon release will take place and ice cream from Nebraska’s Dairy Store — one of Franco’s favorite places on campus — will be served.
