To promote safe bicycle riding and foster community among cyclists, Campus Recreation will offer several free bicycle opportunities this spring.
Smart Cycling
Participants will learn how to use a bicycle with confidence and competence for pleasure, utility and sport under various highway, climate, terrain and traffic conditions. Class time is spent on the bike doing drills to build bike handling skills and riding on the street as a part of traffic. Participants should pass an online test prior to class start. Three Smart Cycling classes are offered this spring from 4 to 8 p.m. March 29, April 12 and April 19 at the Outdoor Adventures. Classes are free for university students and Campus Rec members and $30 for General Public.
Bike Maintenance Skills Class
Classes will focus on basic maintenance skills bicyclists can do on their own to avoid being stranded on the street or trail. A new topic will be presented each class. Topics include patching a flat, basic brake and shifter adjustments, riding position/bike fit and layering for winter commuting enjoyment. Classes are held 6 to 8 p.m. April 5, 12 and 19 at the Outdoor Adventures Center. Classes are free for university students and Campus Rec members and $30 for general public.
Ice Cream Rides
Ice cream rides are fun, casual rides for students to get to know each other and learn more about bicycling in Lincoln and the Outdoor Adventures program. Students meet at the Outdoor Adventure Center and ride to a local ice cream shop for a free treat. Bike helmet and bike rental are included, but space is limited so participants are encouraged to register early. Students are allowed to enroll in one free ride per semester.
Participants can register for the events online, by calling 402-472-4777 or by visiting the Outdoor Adventures Center.
