Campus Recreation will offer several safety classes this fall, including CPR, Automated External Defibrilator and First Aid, and lifeguard instructor and review certification courses.
CPR, AED and first aid training The American Red Cross CPR, AED + First Aid program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies. Completed training provides a two-year American Red Cross certification often required for both professional and service jobs. Participants can also earn academic credit for this course by enrolling in FITN160 on MyRed. Non-credit course fees are $60 for students at Nebraska and Campus Recreation members and $75 for non-members. These classes are offered 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5, Oct. 3 and Nov. 25. Register here.
Lifeguard instructor certification
The instructor course trains instructor candidates to teach Red Cross lifeguarding, shallow water lifeguarding, waterfront skills, waterpark skills, CPR/AED for professional rescuers and health-care providers, administering emergency oxygen and bloodborne pathogens training. Instructor candidates also will become familiar with junior lifeguarding, lifeguard management, safety training for swim coaches and basic water rescue. This is offered as a blended learning course, which combines online learning with on-site sessions where participants will practice skills and demonstrate competency. The deadline for registration is Oct. 25; participants must be 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course. Participants must also have a current American Red Cross lifeguarding/FA/CPR/AED certificate or an equivalent certificate from another organization; complete the mandatory pre-course skills evaluation at 7 p.m. Oct. 30; and complete online blended learning components before the first on-site skills session at 7 a.m. Nov. 10.
The course is Nov. 10-12; registration fees are $290 for Husker students and Campus Rec members, $315 for non-members (plus a $35 non-refundable fee to the American Red Cross for the online learning component). Register here.
Lifeguarding review certification
The Lifeguarding Review course is a blended learning course that re-certifies by reviewing course content within a formal course setting. The deadline to register is Nov. 8; participants must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course. Participants must also have a current American Red Cross lifeguarding/FA/CPR/AED certificate; complete the mandatory pre-course skills evaluation at 7 p.m. Nov. 13; and complete the online blended learning prior to the first on-site skills session scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 2. Registration fees are $125 for Husker students and Campus Rec members, $175 for non-members (plus a $35 non-refundable fee to the American Red Cross for the online learning component). Register here.
