Elizabeth Burden will present the Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist lecture at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in Sheldon Museum of Art’s Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Burden is the Elizabeth Rubendall Artist-in-Residence at the Great Plains Art Museum this fall. Her work engages in artistic archiving, blending multidisciplinary studio work with social practice to reflect on the past, present and future.
Born and raised in Lincoln, Burden is the great-granddaughter of Henry and Mary Burden, Nebraska’s first Black homesteaders. She is a third-generation Nebraskan and now lives in the southwest.
The remaining lectures in the series are:
- Sept. 17: Zanna Gilbert, senior research specialist at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, will discuss her exhibition “How to Be a Guerrilla Girl” and explore how archival and curatorial research illuminates the histories of feminist, conceptual and activist art practices.
- Oct. 22: Wesaam Al-Badry, a visual social documentary photographer, long-form investigative journalist and interdisciplinary artist, will discuss work centered on environmental justice, immigration, labor and the lived experiences of marginalized communities. His work spans photography, film, video installation and sculpture.
- Oct. 29: Laura Crehuet Berman, a native of Barcelona, Spain, will discuss her work and career as an artist and educator. Her work focuses on pattern, design and bold colors and has been widely collected and exhibited. She has taught printmaking, book arts and color studies at the Kansas City Art Institute since 2002.
- Nov. 12: Rochelle Feinstein, an acclaimed artist and educator and professor emerita at Yale School of Art, will discuss her multidecade practice and works featured in “Gender, Genre, Generation,” currently on view at Sheldon. The exhibition explores how abstract painting can respond to cultural, political and media realities of contemporary life.
The School of Art, Art History and Design’s Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series brings speakers to Nebraska each semester to enhance students’ education. The series is presented in collaboration with Sheldon Museum of Art.
Each visiting artist or scholar spends up to three days on campus meeting with classes, participating in critiques and giving demonstrations.
