School of Music events this week (Nov. 24-30) include the University of Nebraska Brass Quintet performing a program devoted to classic rock songs.
The performance, “Roll Over Beethoven, Tell Tchaikovsky the News,” is free and open to the public. It is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27 at Kimball Recital Hall.
The idea grew from positive feedback received when the quintet played jazz and blues numbers during Nebraska commencement exercises. Also, when Dave Hall, assistant professor of music, started playing drums with the quintet, the group found they could better tackle popular music.
The group made the choice with the caveat that it would not do the typical brass quintet treatment of rock music, which is to arrange it and play it in the classical style. That decision was made to make the music sound as close as possible to the original popular tunes. The group also has plans to record the pieces.
Songs featured in the recital are “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day” by Chicago, “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by the Tokens, “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder, “Hey You” by Pink Floyd, “Honey Pie” by The Beatles, “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, and “Live and Let Die” by Paul McCartney and Wings.
Quintet members are Scott Anderson, trombone; K. Craig Bircher, trumpet; Craig Fuller, tuba; Alan Mattingly, horn; and Scott Quackenbush, trumpet.
