The exhibition “Bloom and Bust: New Visions of Growth” will open Oct. 14 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Eisentrager•Howard Gallery.

“Bloom and Bust” runs Oct. 14-27 at the gallery, which is located in the center of the first floor of Richards Hall.

As fallout from consumer capitalism continues to accumulate and viral particles in the air spread deadly illnesses, “growth” has become a loaded term in many disciplines. The works in this exhibition all explore notions of growth and progression, from kinship and food-sharing networks to the propagation of mosses, molds and fire.

These projects, made by members of assistant professor Katie Anania’s art history seminar, “Visualizing Crisis: Food, Water and Biopolitics,” offer alternative ways to approach and locate growth — sometimes harnessing it as a source of energy and vision, other times exploring the depleting effects of colonial or economic expansion. The word “bloom” serves as a touch point, offering possibilities for flowering amidst financial, ecological and immunological collapse.
