A free screening of the film “Between Allah and Me (and Everyone Else)” and a facilitated discussion are 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
The screening is hosted by the women’s and gender studies program and the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design. “Between Allah and Me (And Everyone Else)” explores four Muslim women’s challenges as they choose to wear — or not wear — the hijab.
The story of each woman, as she interacts with different members of her family and the community, reveals the diversity of Muslim experiences and viewpoints regarding the hijab.
The film conveys how the hijab carries many different meanings. “Between Allah and Me (and Everyone Else)” shows the complex effects the hijab has on Muslim women, their families and communities and raises questions about the present and future of multicultural societies in North America.
The discussion following the screening will feature faculty Loukia Sarroub, Abla Hasan and Claire Nicholas, as well as graduate student Samirah Alotaibi.
This screening and discussion is free and open to the public.
