Applications due March 15 for Student Research Days Slam

UNL's second annual Student Research Days Slam is March 31.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's second annual Student Research Days Slam is March 31.

The second annual Student Research Days Slam, happening March 31, invites students from all disciplines to share their work with a campuswide audience via short, engaging presentations.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. at the Wick Alumni Center, with the Slam to follow, from noon to 1 p.m.

This year’s Slam asks students to reflect on the prompt: “What is it about your research or creative activity that gives you life, makes you feel ‘glitter in your stomach?’ Tell us about the moments, experiences or aspects of your work that most excite and exhilarate you.”

Applications will be in the form of a 90-second video “trailer” previewing the potential Slam presentation, submitted via Flip. Jocelyn Bosley, research impact coordinator for the Office of Research and Economic Development and host of the Slam, said the committee is interested both in the content of submissions and in students’ ability to engage the viewer with creativity and narrative skills.

Application videos must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on March 15. Five finalists will be selected to present at the Slam. A winner, to be decided by the audience, will receive a $500 prize, and the other finalists will each receive $100.

The Student Research Days Slam builds on the success of other Slam events on campus. The Science Slam, hosted each spring from 2016 to 2021 by the Nebraska Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, was the first event of its kind in the United States and received  national media coverage. By inviting participation from the arts and humanities as well as STEM fields, the Student Research Days Slam aims to share university research and creative activity across the disciplines.

Bosley encourages students to consider applying for this opportunity to “share their work with their peers in a fun and supportive environment and add a little bling to their C.V.”

Attendees must register to attend the event. For more information, watch the video or contact Bosley at jbosley@unl.edu.

The Slam is part of Student Research Days, March 27-31.
