Recent accomplishments earned by members of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln community include faculty Shannon Rowen and Elliott Tebbe. Other achievements include scholarships and awards given to students from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and a mini-grant awarded to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
Faculty/Staff
Shannon Rowen, assistant professor of practice in hospitality, restaurant and tourism management, has been appointed to the city of Lincoln personnel board by Chris Beutler, Lincoln’s mayor. The Lincoln City Council approved the appointment Aug. 15. The five-person board meets monthly to advise the mayor, city council and human resources director on matters concerning personnel and human resource administration. The appointment is effective through June 22, 2021.
Elliott Tebbe, assistant professor in the counseling psychology program, is among five new research advisory board members announced Aug. 22 by the Born This Way Foundation. Susan Swearer, professor of educational psychology, who has been a member of the board since its inception in 2012, will continue to serve as chair of the research advisory board. Students
Burdette Barker, a doctoral student in biological systems engineering, is one of three university students to receive University of Nebraska system 2016-17 presidential graduate fellowships. Barker is in his third-year pursuit of a doctorate, with researched focused on improving spatial irrigation management with the intent of more optimal use of water. He is a collaborator on a multidisciplinary university research project, in which he’s investigating the impact of alternative conservation practices on soil moisture available for crop production. Abdul Salam was awarded the Best Student Paper award in the International Conference on Computer Communication and Networks. Salam received the award in August in Hawaii for his paper titled “Impacts of Soil Type and Moisture on the Capacity of Multi-Carrier Modulation in Internet of Underground Things.”
Samantha Teten, agronomy major, was awarded the West Central Division Intern Award for outstanding summer interns by Helena Chemical. She worked as a summer sales and marketing agronomy intern for the Hutchinson, Kansas, wholesale location. Tetan worked with many of the company’s dealer customers. She positioned Helena’s proprietary product lines and managed product trials across the central Kansas market. For more information, click here.

Students from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications were recognized with scholarships and competitive awards at the recent Nebraska Broadcasters Association convention in Lincoln. KRNU was awarded seven out of 12 student awards. Students accepting awards were Bailey Hurley for TV news story – Sex Offender Speaks; Conor Dunn for TV News Feature – Drag Feature and Joy Carey for TV Sports News Story – Rodeo. Lucille Baker, Brian Hall and Beau Poehlman accepted awards for Radio Public Service Announcement – Waste Puppet Pals. Also involved in producing this spot were Brianna Carlini, Travis Keaschall, Cade McFadden, Jesse Milliken, Bridget Nelson, Alex Schubauer, Michael Straub, Tanner Vonnahme and Keegan Wilson. Tommy Rezac accepted an award for Radio News Story – Jaywalking at UNL; Kellan Heavican for Radio News Feature – Saltillo Road Problems and Parker Cyza for Radio Sports News Story – Foodball Practice Changes.
