Art historian Juliet Sperling, Kollar Endowed Chair in American Art at the University of Washington, will deliver the 2026 Bernard Rosenberg Lecture, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct 12 in Sheldon Museum of Art.

The lecture will explore the surprising visual strategies of 19th-century medical textbooks, from layered anatomical illustrations to interactive paper bodies. Examining intersections of gender, touch and representation, this lecture offers perspectives on how knowledge and bodies were made visible and tactile through art.

A reception will follow the lecture. The event is free and open to the public, but prior registration is encouraged. Find more information and register for the event here.

Sperling holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Pennsylvania. She is also the author of "Tactile Sensibilities: Seeing Through Print in American Art," which will be published by the University of Chicago Press in 2027.
