‘Wrecking Crew’ documentary opens at the Ross

The unsung heroes who played on stacks of wax during the 1960s pop era are celebrated in the documentary “The Wrecking Crew,” which opens June 19 at UNL’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Also showing is “Far From the Madding Crowd,” a film based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy.

“The Wrecking Crew” tells the story of nearly three dozen musicians who provided the backbeat — the bottom and the swinging melody — that drove many of the number one songs of the 1960s. This group, dubbed the Wrecking Crew, rarely received credit on or off albums, but developed the flair and musicianship that made the “West Coast sound” a dominant cultural force around the world.

The film is directed and produced by Denny Tedesco, son of legendary Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedsco.

The documentary is rated PG for language, thematic elements and smoking images.

“From the Madding Crowd” is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (played by Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors. The timeless story of her choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love, as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

“From the Madding Crowd” is rated PG-13 for some sexuality and violence.

Both films show at the Ross through June 25.
