UNL students will travel to Chicago for career exploration

Eighty University of Nebraska-Lincoln students in 11 learning communities will visit Chicago from Oct. 1-3 to participate in site visits and behind-the-scenes tours of Chicago-area businesses and organizations.

Students will learn about potential career options and network with professionals and alumni in their chosen fields, including the following:

  • Advertising and public relations students will tour international PR firm Edelman’s Chicago office to explore global strategies while journalism students will tour the press box for the Chicago White Sox to learn about sports communication.

  • Business students will tour the regional headquarters of Deloitte and Wells Fargo.

  • Education majors will learn how to use visual arts in the classroom at the Art Institute of Chicago while psychology majors will visit Roosevelt University to learn about industrial and organizational psychology.

  • Nutrition and athletic training majors will go behind the scenes at Soldier Field, home of the NFL’s Chicago Bears, and pre-health majors will visit Northwestern Medicine and Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

  • Computer science students will tour Signal, a leader in cross-channel marketing, to learn how data across industries reach people on multiple platforms.

  • Undeclared students will volunteer with Casa Central, the largest Hispanic social service agency in the Midwest, to explore civic engagement opportunities.

In addition to career exploration, students will also explore Navy Pier, take in a performance by renowned improvisational comedy troupe Second City, and visit the Museum of Science and Industry before returning to Lincoln on Saturday evening.

“This is the second year we have organized a trip of this scale, allowing students to learn from a variety of professionals and organizations they may not be familiar with,” said Jordan Black, assistant director of residence life for learning communities and academics. “Through these experiences, students are pushed to consider new possibilities and are provided with a different context to consider the information they are learning in the classrooms at UNL.”
