Students earn Gilman scholarships

Twenty UNL students were awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to study abroad during the 2014-15 academic year.

The award is a nationally competitive scholarship awarded three times a year to undergraduate students seeking to study or intern abroad. Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program costs. The program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies – making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

The 20 UNL students awarded a Gilman Scholarship this year and their planned study areas are:

  • Max Camey will be attending the Nebraska at Oxford program in the United Kingdom, focusing on business and economics.

  • Marissa Gaunt will be furthering her studies towards her Global Studies major this summer in London, England.

  • Alexander Resnick will be studying the Russian language during a ten week program in Kyrgyzstan.

  • Scott Schenkelberg, an engineering major, plans to study in Lille, France, during the summer 2015 session.

  • Tautoya Broadway, Brianna Hekrdle and Pangak Matet will be participating in a UNL faculty-led program to Ethiopia. While in Ethiopia, students will study food security, nutrition, and health under Mary Willis and Jon Kerrigan, global exchange coordinator.

  • Amanda Schnakenberg will be studying in Berlin, Germany, during the summer 2015 session.

  • Matt Lodema will also be studying in Botswana and participating in the UNL faculty-led program led by John Carroll, learning about conservation in southern Africa.

  • David Lillyman will be spending summer 2015 in Atenas, Costa Rica, participating in an internship.

  • Lauren Vagts will be studying in Madagascar, focusing on traditional medicine and health care systems.

  • Adoni Faxas will be studying in the Spanish language in Costa Rica during the summer 2015 session.

  • Taylor Carlberg has plans to study renewable energy policy and development in Bonn, Germany, this summer.

  • Layla Younis will be spending summer 2015 in Meknes, Morocco, studying the Arabic language and culture.

  • Nicole Emanuel spent this past spring 2015 semester studying in Bilbao, Spain, on the UNL co-sponsored program to the University of Deusto.

  • Andrea Gajardo spent this past spring 2015 semester in Valparaiso, Chile, studying the Spanish language and participating in a service-learning opportunity.

  • Taryn and Jenna Sandin spent this past fall 2014 semester (Jenna) and academic 2014-15 year (Taryn) in Seoul, South Korea.

UNL had three additional recipients of the Gilman scholarship during the 2014-15 school year. However, these students were unable to participate in an education abroad program. For more information on UNL’s study abroad opportunities, visit the Education Abroad Office in Love Library, room 127.
