A remodel has expanded services and generated a new name for UNL’s Instructional Design Center.

Now called the Pixel Lab, the space on the first floor of Henzlik Hall is designed to foster collaboration, offer information technology assistance and provide creative support services to students, faculty and staff.

The project, a collaboration between the College of Education and Human Sciences and Information Technology Services, was celebrated with a March 17 open house.

“Prior to the remodel, our space really did look like a repurposed high school gymnasium,” said Valerie Crook, manager of the lab. “Now, through the partnership with ITS, we have created a modern space that allows us to better meet the needs of campus.”

To create a more inviting environment, the remodel divided 123 Henzlik Hall into two distinct areas — an open area for student/faculty use and the Pixel Lab production space.

The open area includes moveable furniture and white boards that can be reconfigured for individual or group usage. The space also features two 90-inch flat screen televisions that can be used for presentations; a computer check out station; an information technology assistance room (which is open at various times during the week); and computers that offer free software tutorials and access to creative applications.

“The space is designed to be versatile and foster collaboration,” said Brad Severa, student learning technology support associate with ITS. “We have students coming in to study alone or to work together on projects. We even have two classes meeting here on a regular basis.”

The Pixel Lab production space is open to assist students, faculty and staff with print production and graphic design needs. It also provides video assistance for education and human sciences students.

“During the remodel, we moved to the basement and awareness of the services we offered dropped off,” Crook said. “This open house is our chance to raise awareness about both this amazing new space and the creative services available through the Pixel Lab.”

The production area is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, while the open study area is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays.
