Folk group The Okee Dokee Brothers will perform during a FamFest show at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

The three-time Parents’ Choice Award winners have garnered praise from NPR’s “All Things Considered” and USA Today and took home the 2013 Grammy for best children’s album. Tickets are on sale at http://liedcenter.org, at the Lied Center box office at 12th and R Streets, or by phone at 402-472-4747.

As childhood friends growing up in Denver, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing were always exploring the outdoors. Whether rafting down their neighborhood creek or discovering hiking trails through the Rocky Mountains, the two were born adventurers. Now they have put that passion for the outdoors at the heart of their Americana folk music, encouraging children and their parents to get outside and get creative.

During their April 2 performance, The Okee Dokee Brothers will be joined on stage by dozens of Lincoln students for a special performance concluding Time Warner Cable’s Science of Sound Spring Break Camp. On March 12-13, the Lied Center and Time Warner Cable teamed up to host a unique spring break camp led by John Bertles, Kennedy Center teaching artist and science educator, as well as local engineers and area music, theater and science teachers at Dawes Middle School. Participating students, grades 5-8, experienced music through Bertles’ hands-on curriculum, which demonstrates how sound waves are created by the vibrations of air through musical instruments that the students made from recycled materials.

Throughout the camp, students rehearsed with Okee Dokee Brothers recordings on their handmade instruments. “Having the opportunity to perform with The Okee Dokee Brothers onstage is truly an authentic, culminating measure of all of the hard work the kids put into their instruments,” said Bill Stephan, executive director of the Lied.

FamFest is free to ticket holders and includes fun, educational activities before the show. Free food and beverages will be provided by Runza, Pepsi and The Cookie Company.
