The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum is hosting a series of plant sales from May 9 to June 19. The sales will feature plants from the region and from a regional seed source.

Regionally native plants are some of the best to tolerate landscape challenges like poor soil, diseases, pests and variable moisture, said Bob Henrickson, horticulture program coordinator.

“That means gardeners are also planting for pollinators, which can increase garden production in their own yards while benefitting the larger environment,” Henrickson said.

The sales will include many edible landscape plants and some under-planted varieites for a more interesting and sustainable landscape. Nut trees include hickory, walnut, pecan and hazelnut. Persimmon and pawpaw trees will also be available, along with fruits like raspberry, currant, serviceberry and grape.

Wildflower-lovers will find lots of prairie plants, including: aster, coneflower, goldenrod, gayfeather and penstemon. Woodland plants for shady areas include wild ginger, woodland phlox, columbine, jack-in-the-pulpit and the fragrant and highly edible sweet cicely.

The first sale is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 at the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum greenhouses south of 38th Street and Leighton Avenue on East Campus. For more information, go to http://arboretum.unl.edu/plant-sales. An online catalog is available by clicking here.
