Humanities conference is April 1-2

The History Graduate Students’ Association will host the 11th annual James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities on April 1-2 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Marla Miller, a professor of history and director of the Public History Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will present this year’s keynote address. Miller’s talk “Remembering Betsy Ross: The Genealogy of an American Legend” will begin at 8 p.m. April 1 in the Great Plains Art Museum, located on 12th and Q streets. A short reception will follow.

Miller’s most recent book “Betsy Ross and the Making of America” was a finalist for the Cundill Prize in History and named on The Washington Post’s “Best of 2010” list. She has also served on the editorial board of Public Historian, New England Quarterly and the Journal of the Early Republic.

Also during the conference, graduate students from a variety of disciplines will present their work in panel discussions concentrating on the theme of “Many Memories, Many Publics: The Past as Nation Building.”

This annual conference honors James A. Rawley, a faculty member of the UNL History Department from 1964 to 2005 and distinguished scholar in the fields of American race relations and Civil War studies. The conference also encourages new scholarship across multiple disciplines.
