A groundbreaking ceremony for the John Breslow Ice Hockey Center will be 11 a.m. Dec. 13. The site for the facility at the southwest corner of Haymarket Park is prepared for construction to begin mid-January with an anticipated opening late August 2015.

Funding for the $11 million facility comes from a $7 million gift from John Breslow, a University of Nebraska alumnus who lives in Phoenix. Other funding comes from a combination of public and private sources, including $800,000 in other private gifts, $2 million from the West Haymarket Joint Public Agency (JPA), $1 million from the UNL Office of Campus Recreation and $200,000 and land from the City of Lincoln. The approximately 54,000 square-foot facility will feature seating for 700 spectators, a single National Hockey League-sized sheet of ice, team locker rooms, public and referee locker rooms, an elevated warm viewing area, concessions and rental areas, office space, and meeting and party rooms.

The facility will be used by local ice hockey and ice skating groups, UNL Campus Recreation for club sports and its ice programs and for open public skating. UNL will own and maintain the rink facility.

Breslow, UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler, JPA representative Tim Clare and University of Nebraska Foundation President and CEO Brian Hastings will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony.

To get to the site of the Breslow Center, follow Sun Valley Boulevard to Line Drive, turn right onto North Fourth Street then left onto V Street to enter the parking lot.
