‘Youth,’ featuring Caine, Keitel, Fonda, opens at the Ross

The film "Youth," playing Jan. 15-28 at UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, features (from left) Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel.

The film “Youth,” starring Hollywood veterans Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and Jane Fonda, opens Jan. 15 at UNL’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Also showing is Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq.”

“Youth” explores the lifelong bond between two friends pondering retirement as they vacation in a luxury Swiss Alps lodge. While Fred (Caine) has no plans to resume his musical career despite the urgings of his daughter Lena (Rachel Weisz), Mick (Keitel) is intent on finishing a screenplay for his muse Brenda (Fonda).

Written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, “Youth” explores if the most important and transformative experiences can come at any time — even late — in life.

“Youth,” which shows at the Ross through Jan. 28, is rated R for graphic nudity, some sexuality and language.

“Chi-Raq,” a modern-day adaptation of Aristophanes’ ancient Greek play “Lysistrata,” features a group of women who band together after a child is murdered by a stray bullet. Led by Lysistrata, the women organize against on-going violence in Chicago’s Southside, creating a movement that challenges the nature of race, sex and violence.

A special introduction and post-screening discussion on “Chi-Raq” is scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Ross. The event is hosted by UNL’s Department of Classics and Religious Studies and CORE, a council of multicultural registered student organization executives that works to promote diversity at UNL. Groups represented through CORE include the African Student Association, Afrikan People’s Union, Middle Eastern Students Unite and Multicultural Business Students Association.

“Chi-Raq,” which shows through Jan. 21, is rated R for strong sexual content, including dialogue, nudity, language, some violence and drug use.
